Publisher Description:
Written from the perspective of Catholic moral theology, this book explores the tragic situation of African women who are living within patriarchy and are threatened by HIV-positive husbands, and it seeks a positive pastoral response. The study is rooted in Tivland in north central Africa, but it has implications for all of Africa. Part One examines the African cultural context, including patriarchal violence. Part Two reports on women's experience, including the frequently unjust situations within which they are trapped, and their vulnerability from partners to HIV/AIDS. Part Three probes the Catholic tradition of sexual ethics in search of an adequate pastoral response. The book is an rich in scholarship, theological expertise, and pastoral depth. The book grew out of author's personal pastoral experience of the tragic death from HIV/AIDS of so many African women and even of whole families.
