The action is developing as a dramatic romance with three main figures involved: the nun Kassia, a famous poetess, the Emperor Theophilos, and his wife Theodora, while in the background the Empire is fighting its enemies - Bulgars and Arabs as well as this the Church is agonizing at the iconoclastic-iconodulic schism. Sophisticated philosophy of the Byzantine intellectual elite with all the variety of political intrigues at the Emperor's Court and the monastic life are framing the allconquering love-story of the hero and heroines that overcome both extern and inner difficulties bringing the main characters to the deep insight into their true selves and discovering the sense of the crucial events in their lives.
