It is the story of Constance, a young upper-class married woman whose paraplegic husband has become distanced and uninterested in his wife. Due to Constance's profuse sexual frustration, she begins to have an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. The difference of class between the two forms a central motif of the novel, which soon became notorious for its explicit descriptions of sex and its employment of then-unprintable words. David Herbert Richards Lawrence (1885 - 1930) was a seminal English novelist, poet, essayist, playwright, and literary critic.
