Although written a century ago, the sixteen stories by Emilia Pardo Baz n collected in this volume are strikingly relevant to contemporary concerns. Emilia Pardo Baz�n�(1851�1921) is considered by many scholars one of the most important writers of nineteenth-century Spain. Instrumental in introducing French naturalism and Russian spiritual realism into Spanish literature, she published twenty novels, twenty-one novellas, two cookbooks, seven plays, nearly six hundred short stories, and hundreds of essays. Her stories are often included in anthologies of Spanish literature, and her works have recently begun appearing in English translations: �The House of Ulloa�and�"The White Horse" and Other Stories.
