Annotation: This companion to Visual Tools for Differentiating Reading & Writing Instruction reveals how the simple but powerful visual strategics that have helped students succeed in language arts can also help them tackle content area texts---from sorting out confusing math word problems to unraveling abstract science concepts to enlivening dry social studies passages.

Educator and artist Roger Essley guides you to tap your students' natural visual-learning skills in the same way professionals in nearly every field of study use drawings and other visuals to build and communicate ideas. Backed by education research and real-life examples from historians, scientists, mathematicians, and teachers in all content areas, Essley sends a compelling message for practical and inclusive teaching; Use pictures. You'll see how-hands-on sketches, simple visual notes, and clear diagram help learners grasp content and think critically in all subject areas.

Essley also addresses digital learning strategies, such as using storyboards for planning PowerPoint® presenstations, to help students fully develop and present their ideas in learning-rich visual formats. Finally, you'll learn how using drawing as an assessment tool can offer you far more information about student learning than any standardized test---and indeed how visual tools can dramatically improve student's test scores.
